The last thing Abu Talib said to them is that, I am on the Millat of Abdul Muttalib. After this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'I will ask for forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden to you'. In this context, this verse was revealed
'It is not for the Prophet and the believers that they should ask forgiveness if they are close relatives for the polytheists, even when it has become clear to them that they are in the Hell.'
Further revelation is:
'If you like whom you love, you can not guide him' [Surah Kaashach - 56]

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said that he heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying that when his uncle Abu Talib was discussed in front of him, he said, I hope my Suffarah on the Day of Resurrection will be of benefit to him.
